Linking Strategies that Build Trust on News Web Sites
By SuperUser Account @ 3:28 PM :: 209 Views ::

Most media web sites were created in the late 90s or early 2000s. For the most part, they have stuck with that same basic model for almost a decade now. While there is more multimedia content on our sites, the basic story layout remains the same. While technology has served up a new generation of interactive tools, most media web sites have conspicuously stayed with the older model. It isn't lack of funds or technical problems that keep us with the old style web site. We stay with it because the old model fits the vision of our own self-image and the way we want the world to treat us.

2010 News Web Branding - Think Small
By SuperUser Account @ 5:07 PM :: 226 Views ::

|
|
As I go around the country giving web revenue seminars, there is one part of my presentation that is always a big crowd pleaser - RSS technology. After the group has had that sleep inducing, carbo packed lunch, I will whip out the RSS reader software and the audience magically comes alive. The tools of RSS are incredibly useful in broadcasting, but they hold some profound implications for the way newsrooms will run in the future.
Let's start with a quick review of RSS basics. RSS stands for "real simple syndication." Instead of the reader going out and finding the news, the news comes directly to them. This means they can collect, filter and view thousands of specific articles, forums, blogs, photos and video all from one screen. No more meandering from web site to web site. RSS readers (NewsGator, Yahoo Pipes, Google Reader) gather RSS feeds sent out from information providers all over the planet.
I am continually surprised at how few newsroom staffers use this incredibly powerful tool. If you want to be the genius at the morning news meeting, there is nothing more powerful than a well organized RSS reader. Thousands of story ideas from all over the world are neatly presented and synopsized, all arranged by theme and filtered by keywords.

10 Great SEO Tips, Part 1
By SuperUser Account @ 6:35 PM :: 271 Views ::
0 Comments :: :: Web Ideas
|
|
There was a time when companies could simply boot up a Web site and their content would immediately begin showing up in various search engines. For better or worse, those days are long gone. To have content displayed, corporations need to understand what the search engines are looking for and then provide it to them. If one company does not want to do that, a competitor certainly will.
As evidenced by the phenomenal success of Google, search has evolved from an interesting sideline into a primary function for many, if not most, Internet users. Consequently, more and more companies are putting content up on their Web sites to attract the attention of search engines.
"You can have really great information on a site, but if a potential customer can't find you, what good is it?" asked George Aspland, president of eVision.
Chances are that most times a person won't find the company. If a user types in a simple query today, tens of thousands, millions and even billions of results come pouring back in an instant. In most cases, a user will sift though a couple of pages -- basically a few dozen links -- and either re-enter the query or give up the search in disgust.

Garnering the attention of the search engine vendors requires a delicate balance. While there are some steps that companies can take to improve their ranking, there are other items that lower the company's search rankings, and can even result in them being blacklisted in some cases. Consequently, they need to maintain a proper balance.

Building Web Communities to Grow TV Website Revenue
By SuperUser Account @ 5:06 PM :: 210 Views ::

|
|
If you take a look at some of the most visited sites on the web, you'll find a common design architecture that adds mightily to their success. They have a structured design that fosters commenting, sharing and reader interaction. While the primary selling point of their site is information, the real revenue comes from the fan interaction and commenting that happens continually. To put it simply - information gets them to the site, but interaction keeps them on the site.
This kind of sticky architecture is something that most media companies don't build into their website flow plans. A one-way flow of information is our heritage in traditional media. For generations the workflow has been that we gather, filter and publish information, and our customers passively consume the presentation. While most media companies publicly affirm reader commenting and participation, our sites carefully limit this kind of dangerous and uncontrolled fraternization.
